The menu is a treasure trove for lovers of genuine Mexican comfort food. One cannot speak about La Puente without mentioning the iconic Smothered Burrito with Cheese, generously layered with rich, melted cheese and accompanied by a hearty side of rice and beans. For breakfast lovers, dishes like Huevos Rancheros and the robust Steak and Eggs (featuring a 10 oz top sirloin) bring both bold flavors and satisfying portions to the table. Fans of sizzling entrees rave about the Chicken and Shrimp Fajitas, which arrive perfectly seasoned and sizzling, ready to be wrapped in warm tortillas.
One of the true highlights is La Puente’s enchilada selection—ranging from classic Cheese and Beef to the more adventurous Chile Colorado and Chile Verde, some served in traditional corn tortillas and others wrapped in flour for a twist. These dishes feature layers of tender meat, savory sauces, and melted cheese that deliver an explosion of flavor with every bite.
For those with a sweet tooth, the Fried Ice Cream with Choice of Toppings offers a delightful contrast of textures—creamy, crispy, and just the right amount of indulgent. And the signature Sex Cake is a must-try for visitors wanting to end their meal on a unique and memorable note.
Beverage options complement the meal perfectly, with choices like refreshing Horchata, expertly crafted margaritas, and a selection of domestic and imported beers. The coffee, described by regulars as "a nice hot black cup," rounds out the experience, especially for those who appreciate a robust finish.
But what truly makes La Puente stand out are the heartfelt reviews from loyal patrons. Hope remarks on its status as the "best restaurant for homemade Mexican food," praising both the taste and the stellar service. Marlene Romero-Gerard, a frequent diner, expresses a deep connection with the restaurant’s New Mexico-style cooking, appreciating the nostalgic flavors that remind her of her mother’s kitchen. The consistently generous portions, rapid service, and reasonable prices are highlighted by Blair Bauer, who adds that the food is perfect for warming up on a chilly day.
Shantel Martinez, a long-time customer, gushes about the unbeatable chips and salsa, recommending the smothered burrito as a lifelong favorite. Meanwhile, Kristin Stoknes notes that each visit to Salt Lake City includes a stop at La Puente, specifically for that unbeatable smothered burrito paired with extra smothered rice—a dish so substantial it stretches through multiple meals.

Best restaurant for homemade Mexican food. Was visiting Utah and had stopped here for lunch. Food was great and tasty. Service and atmosphere was excellent. Must visit and would definitely recommend.
Always eat here when I get in town. It's New Mexico cooking at its finest. Also reminds me of my mom's cooking. I will either have their smothered burrito, their fries smothered and with cheese, their breakfast smothered with green chili or chili Colorado. A little disappointed that refills are no longer free. Is it really that much more to give free refills? Ther service was excellent. Our waitress was on the ball. Got us in and out quickly, since we were on a time constraint, but was very attentive. Price was reasonable.
This place is a favorite of my landlady's family, they love it here. So I stopped in with a friend and I can see what the fuss is about! Very generous and tasty portions that are sure to warm you up when it is chilly out. The service is SO quick, and the prices are super reasonable. Would recommend!
Been coming for years! They have the BEST chips and Salsa. A smothered burrito with cheese and a side of rice is a MUST TRY if you have never been before. It will always be my go to and it will never change. Atmosphere and food are very comforting. My family comes from New Mexico/Southern Colorado so the food here is good I grew up on. It’s as close as possible or as authentic as it can get when it comes to food and vibes. It’s my comfort spot.
Always hit this place when I make it to SLC. And I always get the same thing. The smothered burrito with cheese and rice and I have them smother the rice. This meal in itself is three meals for me and I wish that they had another one in St. George. The only one downfall is that I took a big bite of a chip with a bunch of salsa and my mouth was on fire. I wish they had something a little more mild but she said it's just one high heat is the only way they do their salsa but otherwise fantastic.
So very happy to discover La Puenta! The food is authentic and plentiful for both breakfast and dinner. Atmosphere and staff are also great. Prices are very reasonable and be sure to bring your appetite the servings are generous to say the least!
